Two Local Award-Winning Writers Will Present at Upcoming Book and Author Dinner
The 32nd Annual Friends of the Library Book and Author Dinner will feature Kimberly Willis Holt and Jodi Thomas as guest speakers. The dinner, which honors Panhandle authors who have published a book within the last year, is open to the public.
The Traveler:
Kimberly Willis Holt has published three works entitled My Louisiana Sky, Mister and Me, and When Zachery Beaver Came to Town. When asked where she gets her inspiration for her stories Holt responds, "by moments in my childhood." The daughter of a Navy chief, Holt has traveled to Paris, Guam, and Washington just to name a few. With such a rich resource of childhood memories, Holt's stories are both diverse yet familiar, illustrating Holt‘s literary quest for home and family roots.
She has received awards and critical acclaim including the 1999 National Book Award for Young People's Literature, ALA's Top Ten Best Books for Young Adults, and Boston Globe-Horn Book Award Honor for Fiction. Although Holt enjoys all the attention and acclaim for her three works, Holt claims the best part about being a writer is "wearing my pajamas to work."
The Romantic:
Jodi Thomas, a retired teacher with a master's degree in family studies, has enjoyed the past 12 years as a romance writer. Her 15th novel,To Wed in Texas, hit the New York Times and USA Today bestseller lists.
She has won many awards including the Romantic Times Reviewers' choice for Best Western romance of 1988 , the National Press Women's Novel of the Year, and two R.I.T.A. awards for best Historical Romance from the Romance Writers of America.
In 1998, she won the Holt medallion for outstanding literary talent from the Virginia Romance Writer. Also that year she won the career achievement award from Romantic Times for her outstanding contributions to women's fiction during the past 10 years. However, nothing is more impressive than looking beyond the awards and reading the glimpse of Texas romance as captured by Thomas.
